Ask the insurer about the exact visit.

- Will my plan pay for care from this person?
- Will it pay for a visit about the problem I described?
- What part of the bill would be mine?
- Do I need a doctor’s referral or the plan’s permission before the visit?
- Would any tests or a later visit have a separate bill?
- Can I get this answer in writing?

IRS guidance checked on September 26, 2026, says care to find or treat a disease can count as a medical expense.
Under that guidance, spending solely for better general health is excluded from medical care.
For a weight-loss programme, the guidance requires a doctor to have identified a specific disease being treated.
